Vestas Wind Systems, a global energy company that produced wind turbines beginning in 1979, was in the midst of a digital transformation to support its unfolding vision to become the global leader in sustainable energy solutions. The company’s ability to deliver new digital services depended on the transformation of the IT unit and the development of effective partnerships. This case vignette describes the early stages of the transformation—particularly the redesign of the IT unit around an offerings portfolio; the emergence of effective partnerships; and clarification of digital responsibilities.
