Organizational Perspectives on Firefighting
Roberto Fernandez
In the current fast-paced modern business environment, it is very common for executives and professionals to be pulled into situations of overload where commitments exceed organizational capacity. In many cases, this reality kicks off dynamics of organizational firefighting, where resources are diverted from on-going projects to deal with the most pressing problems. But starving on-going projects of needed resources often has the consequence of creating critical problems in those projects. Although unintended, the cascading effects of firefighting responses erode the organization’s capacity to prioritize and plan, driving out its ability to reliably execute. In this session, we will delve into the organizational roots of firefighting cycles. The framework we develop will be important for suggesting approaches to avoid the destructive consequences of these dynamics.
