Hot Topic: Quantum for the Enterprise

February 11 & 12, 2025 | Zoom Webinars

Hot Topic Webinars

MIT CISR is excited to bring a new type of event to our member organizations! Featuring leading-edge research findings from a variety of sources, Hot Topics are delivered live online without an attendance cap. Anyone from an MIT CISR member organization who is interested in the topic may register to attend.

Quantum for the Enterprise
with Mekena Metcalf

Quantum technology maturation incentivizes investment to uncover new applications by leading global enterprises. These enterprises aspire to harness properties of quantum mechanics to deliver more secure, more efficient, and more accurate analytic solutions underpinning core business models. Quantum technology also poses a large risk to the enterprise, along with opportunity, as it can provably break ubiquitous encryption protocols exponentially faster than classical algorithms. Metcalf will discuss how HSBC developed and executed a quantum technology strategy designed to capture near-term value from quantum applications and mitigate cyber risk across the Group. This strategy resulted in HSBC becoming a leading financial institution, recognized globally in quantum technology alongside driving real business transformation in post-quantum security and quantum algorithm integration. This talk will deep dive into an existing, well-developed use case relating to financial crime, and discuss how the HSBC quantum team partnered horizontally with the financial crime analytics team to build and scale this quantum application. The technical approach leverages quantum-inspired algorithms—quantum methods on classical computers—that can drive immediate business value whilst subsequently preparing the business for more advanced, future quantum hardware.
