- I study how companies create more effective business models and manage the organizational change that business model transformations entails. In 2018, I coauthored a book, "What's Your Digital Business Model?" with my longtime collaborator, Peter Weill. In that book, we described two dimensions that many companies are transforming themselves on. One, knowledge of their end customer and two, moving from value-chains to ecosystems and the capabilities that companies need to build if they are going to successfully transform. Another research project that I'm particularly proud of is work we did on the digital savviness of all of the publicly-traded boards of directors in the U.S. We used machine-learning techniques to code the bios of over 40,000 directors and then analyzed how the digitally-savviness of the board affected firm performance. The results were stronger than I had imagined. The firms with digitally-savvy boards were approximately a third better on financial metrics like revenue growth, ROA, and market-cap growth. My current research covers several areas. One is describing and analyzing the pathways that companies are following to transform themselves and identifying what a future-ready company looks like and how companies get to that state. The second is describing digitally-savvy top management teams and how they manage their enterprises as they transform. And the third is exploring investment patterns in digital. I use both quantitative methods and interviews in my work and in all of my projects. I examine financial performance impacts. I'm looking forward to digging into these projects. It will be a fun, productive year. ((upbeat electronic music)
