Abstract: There is a lot of agreement among the CIOs we talk to on the opportunities and challenges of a digital economy. However, we found strong divergence in the focus and key practices of CIOs in top-performing versus bottom-performing firms. CIOs from virtually all the firms recognize the threat from digital disruption. The CIOs of top-performing firms—firms with net margins in the top quartile relative to their industry average—operate differently in four areas. Top performers (1) spend more time with external customers, (2) obsessively focus on innovation, (3) are deeply engaged with their executive committees, and (4) open up their systems for internal and external use.

Great article, thanks. As someone working with CIOs in the public sector, I wonder how much of this analysis would differ. Of course the concept of “top-performing firms” is essentially for-profits, but perhaps not. I welcome any thoughts on how to apply some of these lessons inside the public sector.

Public sector firms are deeply focused on fulfilling their mission and thus the CIOs might even spend more time with their customers as those relationships matter in the mission. However, many public sector firms put fulfilling the mission at the forefront and thus may underinvest in innovation and opening up systems. I think that public sector CIOs may want to benchmark themselves against our results but evaluate in light of the mission.
